Yumi's Cells korean drama adaptation is one of those dramas that made a buzz immediately after it was announced. If you're a fan of webtoons specifically those published on Naver, then you're definitely aware of how popular the webtoon is mainly in South Korea.
If I could read your mind....
That's the title of one of the songs in this drama's original soundtrack which I think is very befitting.
So what makes this drama unique and really stand out from the rest?
It's the concept and the way how they tell the story of the main character.
In a nutshell, Yumi's cells is about a woman in her thirties, who takes us to her journey through life, finding love and discovering herself. The story shows how each relationship and experiences made her know more about herself and helped her become the woman she's supposed to be.
If you're a fan of watching korean dramas like me, then you must be used to these sudden inserts of inner voices stating what the drama character is thinking about. The unique thing about Yumi's cells is that instead of using inner voices, they made use of these cute animated cells to express what the character is really thinking about despite of how she acts on the outside. The effective execution made it easier for us viewers, to understand more the character and made her more relatable. Getting an insight of her inner thoughts made us realize that it's normal to think the way she does, same as they way we do as humans. Another noticeable thing about these cells is that each represents something: human feelings and emotions.
Here's my initial take about the drama so far.
- The transition from live action to animation was surprisingly smooth and well made considering that this is something new for a korean drama.
- The webtoon is so popular in Korea with a really huge following that there's a big concern about Kim Go Eun being casted as Yumi. Starting from the airing of the first episode up to now (at episode 6), she proved otherwise and everyone turned. She showed to all that she's meant to play "Yumi" to life in the small screen. Other castings are also on point. It was like as if they directly came out of the webtoon (shout out to Ruby and Woong!).
- The cells are so cute, funny and can be dramatic at times. It was as if they're all fighting for something but they are loyal to their main goal which is to support Yumi all the way towards her happiness. As mentioned, the cells were effective in showing us the inner thoughts of our dear Yumi. From here we get to know clearly what's inside her head including the conflicting thoughts and how she ends up choosing one final thought or end action. The cells are deemed symbolic of the most common feelings that every human experiences.
- Kim Go Eun's acting is so good in an unbiased opinion. Even those who initially didn't believe in her will agree with me. She's like the real life "Kim Yumi". Actually this is pretty hard for normally in a drama, for us to know the inner thoughts of a character, we solely rely on their acting of expressions and physical actions but here it's the other way around. Kim Go Eun needed to act based on the cells dialogues. I'm surprised how she effectively shows through her eyes and micro expressions each thoughts of the cells inside Yumi's mind.
- The drama is so relatable as a woman in my thirties myself. I love the fact that they showed "real life struggles" and how a woman typically reacts on every turn. You'll find Yumi's character so relatable. I appreciate also how they show that you don't need to have it all figured out in your thirties. The journey and timeline is different for everyone.
- I like how this drama effectively shows the differences between people. How actually unique a person can be. The inner thoughts through the cells shows how each person reacts with one another and every situation based on their personalities, molded by their previous experiences.
- This drama shows the importance of balance. Even if there's said to be a "prime cell" which is like a representation of one's overall personality or priority, they showed that each of these cells has its own purpose and that everything should not be more than the other. Meaning every feeling is valid but anything in excess of it is no longer healthy for a person. Take for example the anxiety cell. Though anxiety is typically considered an unhealthy or negative feeling, it's there because we need it. It protects us at times too.
- Lastly is Yumi and Woong's relationship. So far they're showing effectively the progress of a couple in love. How they learn more about each other in every experience and struggles they go through together. Can't help also but comment on the great chemistry of Kim Go Eun (as Yumi) and Ahn Bo Hyun (as Woong). Yeah the kilig is so intense!
There you have it for now. So far the drama has been getting positive reviews both locally (Korea) and internationally. All good words and comments on the production, casting and the actors' performances. Hopefully they'll get more recognition that they deserve.
